Groundbreaking New Results from the Event Horizon Telescope

I will speak at a press conference at the European Southern Observatory in Garching and online on groundbreaking Milky Way results from the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration, on 28 April at 15:00 CET. The press conference is organized by ESO and the EHT project. You can follow the event live at https://www.eso.org/public/live/ or watch the […]

Effelsberg Observatory Affected by Flood Catastrophy

An incredible flood catastrophy has hit our region and caused dramatic destruction. People suffered damage and loss of their homes and sadly lives were lost. Our thougths are with all people affected. The Effelsberg Observatory suffered comaratively minor damage, which we hope to be able to repair soon.  https://lnkd.in/dJvQzeZ

Some galaxies eject super-energetic, clustered jets of plasma into space. And all of them seem to come from black holes. How is this connected? My guess: these black holes have a magnetic field and rotate. This causes them to eject electrically charged particles outward. You can only check this by looking. Our concept: use the […]

EU funded OPTICON RadioNet PILOT has started

ORP Pilot Graphics

Until now, there have been two separate cooperation networks for Earth-based astronomy in Europe, one for the optical domain and one for the radio wave domain. OPTICON and RadioNet have now joined forces to form Europe’s largest collaborative network for Earth-based astronomy. Funded with €15 million under the Horizon 2020 program, the project aims to […]

2020 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics for the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration

The Breakthrough Foundation has announced that the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration receives the 2020 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, in recognition of their achievement of making the first image of a black hole in the galaxy Messier 87 https://breakthroughprize.org/News/54. The citation reads: “For the first image of a supermassive black hole, taken by means of […]

Breakthrough: Event Horizon Telescope unveils first image of a Black Hole

On 10 April 2019 15:00 in Brussels, Carlos Moedas, the European Commissioner for Research, introduced a press conference announcing the image of the supermassive Black Hole in the galaxy M87. The event was live streamed and simultaneous press conferences were held in Santiago, Shanghai, Taipei, Tokyo, and Washington.

Cosmic Magnifying Lens Reveals Inner Jets of Black Holes

An international team of astronomers including J. Anton Zensus from the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn, Germany, found evidence for a bizarre lensing system in space, in which a large assemblage of stars is magnifying a much more distant galaxy containing a jet-spewing supermassive black hole. The discovery provides the best view […]

Reflections on the European VLBI Network EVN

As my term as Chair of the EVN Consortium Board of Directors is about to end I would like to express my thanks for all the efficient and friendly interactions with the EVN partners that I have experienced during my past 2 years in office.  This has eased my task immensely and made the time both rewarding and enjoyable. I […]
